Axe and Wedge: handmade?

I found these today for $5 each at a (fancy!) estate sale. Of course, lots of logging history up here in my neck of the woods.

The axe, in particular, looks hand-forged. And it looks seriously old to me. I doubt its current handle, which, at 36" seems way too long, is original. The axe head may be upside down too.

The 'wedge' looks like an axe head itself, but there's no hole in it for any handle.

I request your comments on any identification or age, and I'm curious: if these are indeed hand-forged, how does that affect their value or collectability?

Interesting. So does that correlate with age in general?

 

Right. As in, saw in a cross-cut, then pound these wedges in to keep the huge weight of the tree from pinching your saw and stopping it. Makes sense.

 

both very proud and historic pieces.....if they could talk !!!
