Hi everyone thank you for accepting me. I have bought a cameo ring that says 9ct inside. I’m just wondering if you think it’s real and what age it possibly is? I’m worried as it doesn’t have a hallmark it’s fake.

Hi, @Paula44, and thank you for joining us. I've taken the liberty of reposting your photograph as Full Image rather than Thumbnail so it's easier for everyone to see. You'll want to remember to do that in the future. (And not to worry. All new members do the same thing in their first post.)

    Hi Komokwa
Thanks for your reply. Sorry for not explaining correctly. Does the cameo look to be real and does the ring look to have any age and is it real gold?
I have a collection of old/antique rings and none of them have a mark like that inside without a stamp? I’m from the UK so I have always said Hallmark my apologies.
Really enjoying looking at all the rings on this forum. Thanks.

A lot of older UK gold doesn't have hallmarks. We can't tell from a photo if your ring is gold, but to me it is very likely gold, and British.

As for the cameo, it is probably real shell, but could you post a photo of the back of the cameo so we can see?
No need to apologize. You are used to full hallmarks.:)

Thank you I am used to full hallmarks so I’m questioning this ring thank you for taking the time to reply. I’ve added a photo of the back but you can’t see the cameo as it has some kind of covering over the back.

If 'real' means actual shell then yes, it is real. I'd put it to the 1950s or after.

Thank you Bronwen, I was hoping it was shell. If it’s 1950’s would it not be expected to have a hallmark on it to be gold?

It has a fineness mark. Do you mean a maker's mark? I'm going to ask @Ownedbybear for clarification on UK gold marking standards. I just do cameos. :)

Brit here. 9ct is a very very common marking on small gold things, from about the late nineteenth up until after the second war. To my eye, the setting is nicer than the cameo. Bronwen knows her dates on those, the ring itself could be forties or fifties.

Oh there you go, she tagged me just as I was typing!

There’s an awful lot of our stuff which doesn’t have full hallmarks. It’s really only from the late fifties into the sixties that it became more the norm.

Thank you owned by bear. I honestly had no idea there was si much that didn’t have hallmarks. I was questioning if it were gold and then if the cameo was genuine. X

A lot of American jewelry from then or earlier isn't marked at all. I'd almost wonder if the ring wasn't made earlier and then the cameo was added later when it was being sold.
