Featured Grandmother's Cameo

This was given to me by my 85 yr old mother but she can not remember if it was her moms or her grandmother's. Can someone please give me an idea of about how old it is and is it something that I should insure.

there looks to be a number on the pin closure....

I see no need to pay extra insurance premiums

Welcome, Heidi. It's a lovely cameo, cut in helmet shell. The hinge & clasp place it to the 1920s, I would think. Is the frame white gold with yellow gold accents?

It's a very nice piece, made priceless by its connection to your grandmother(s), but it does not really make any sense to insure it individually.

 

The Roman numerals read XVIII. Could that be the year? On the cusp of the 1920s?

Good eye. I didn't notice. It's possible, maybe even plausible, that the numerals are for the year. @Heidi Rolstad Did anything of significance happen in the year, such as a marriage? It would have been a perfect engagement gift. It's a very fine piece.

That said, I have to add that I see Roman numerals on the backs of cameos from time to time & they do not pertain anything we can recognize now. Inventory numbers, price codes...

 

I am not 100% sure if it is silver and gold, but it looks to me to be just gold.as for the roman numerals for a significant date nothing matchs that date that we know of. I thank you all for your help.

 

Other than that's the year WWI ended. Perhaps after years of scrimping, someone decided to splurge. Or a soldier brought home a beautiful gift at the end of the war?
