Featured Gibbard Dining Set

Hello,

My mother is thinking of selling her dining set that was left to her by her aunt. It is made by Gibbard, she thinks around 1970. It comes with table (with 2 leaves), 6 chairs (2 armchairs) and china cabinet. Not certain what type of wood it is. All in very good condition. Can anyone advise on what the set may be worth?

We don't generally do values on 1970 furniture......

it is a nice set..... & I'm sure some young folks starting out would love to have it, if they could afford the house to put it in.
Or maybe a large apartment.....

Where is the set ?
A big city will fare better than a small rural town...
you're not shipping , so the buyer would have to be semi local...and come get it.
While it's not MCM in design...... and still considered as brown furniture ...it has a light open feel to it , which should help find a buyer....
You may be better selling the cabinet separate from the rest....
There's money here........but not big money !

 

I see it more 1960s . Still a hint of MCM to it. In a city the younguns would snap this up. Hell,Id snap it up ! It looks to be in impeccable shape and its not too large. Can we see the sides of a drawer ?

 

I see it as early 1970's but what do I know.

 

Would/could you post a photograph of any marks -- logo, serial number, etc.?

This is in a fair-sized city in Canada. Thanks for the idea to offer to sell separately I hadn't thought of that.

I will try to get a photo of the sides of the drawers. Right now all I have is a pic of the label on the bottom of one of the chairs.

 

Wow! I love this set. Here in the US Midwest, it would sell in an instant because it has that mid century look everyone is craving these days. How do you intend to advertise it? Around here Craig's list or FB Marketplace is a good venue or ebay for local pickup. If it were mine, I would start out advertising the entire set for one price. When I was shopping for smaller houses with my son recently (in the last 4 years), all of the houses we viewed had both table/chairs and china cabinet (some in different rooms). If the top comes off the cabinet, it could be used to hold a TV. At a local tag sale that set would be offered separately and would cost about $300-400 for table/chairs and maybe about $250 for the cabinet. Prices might be very different in your area. Wish it was here, I'd buy it for my son.

 

Yes I plan to advertise on Facebook Marketplace and another online buy/sell site. I was thinking the same of the cabinet, I'm not sure if the top comes off but if so it would be a great TV stand. Appreciate your input on pricing!

That's a beautiful set of furniture. Looks like cherry and worth more than you might think, but I can't help with a starting price for your area (I'm in rural Wisconsin).

According to information I read online, Gibbard Furniture Co. has an impressive history -- https://www.napaneebeaver.ca/gibbards-furniture-from-humble-beginnings-to-major-pillar-of-town/. Pieces of their furniture are in Canadian embassies all over the world. in 1964, they introduced a legacy line of cherry and mahogany furniture. Your set looks like 60s-era or early-70s.. The chairs look like solid cherry (someone should verify that before you advertise it). The other pieces are probably a combination of solid and veneer. The China cabinet may sell better alone, especially if the top can be removed and the bottom referred to as a "credenza."

 

Thanks for the info! I agree about the 60s or 70s; a friend of mine who knows more than I do spotted that on the tag under the chair, there is no French language text. Canada started adding French to retail tags in the late 60s early 70s.

Buffet/hutch does look like cherry. The chairs and table frame are more likely to be birch stained to match the cherry. Cherry is not a particularly good wood for chairs, though some are certainly made with it from time to time. Most big furniture companies in the US do not use it for chairs. Would like a good shot of the table top to see the wood (if not formica). Can't tell in the photo.

Sadly, agree that the buffet would probably sell better without the hutch these days. I suppose you could always photograph it both ways and let people know that they don't necessarily need to take the hutch if they don't want it. The prices Ola quoted above would be a tad high for my semi-rural Midwest area. Would probably be a good starting point. You can always come down if you need to. If in or near a large metro area, they might be fine. Think you are going to need to research going rates for used furniture in your area.

 

I did a little more research and found some photos of Gibbard furniture on a Canadian website, Decade Five Furniture Company (https://www.decadefivefurniture.ca/), that specializes in Canadian and Scandinavian mid-century furniture. Their FAQs say they purchase furniture from individuals -- "In fact that is where we get a lot of our beautiful inventory. Sometimes it's difficult to tell the difference between cherry and walnut from photos, but the Decade Five people should know what you have. The photo below is a cherry highboy shown on their website -- it has the same brass hardware on the drawer pulls as your china cabinet.

P.S. Their website mentions they have their own workshop for restoring furniture, but your set looks in excellent condition (even the chair upholstery looks new), so I would think they'd be very eager to buy your set, and willing to pay top dollar compared to something that needs restoration. Of course, they have to make a profit and would deduct the cost of having it picked up or shipped to their location (or maybe they'd require you to arrange/pay for delivery). On the other hand, if you find out what Decade Five would offer and feel it's too low and aren't anxious to sell, then list the set, or the table, chairs, and hutch separately, on Marketplace with prices higher than Decade Five's offer, and eventually you might find just the right buyer(s) and come out ahead.
