That's what I thought too. I'm guessing this is from the same auctioneer who passes cheap Chinese and Indonesian stuff off as Native American?
The date is all wrong before getting any further. That piece looks brand new; an legitimate antique would have signs of age on it somehow.
I was thinking about the other baskets vitry bought at auction, but you are absolutely right of course. Unfortunately auctions and selling venues are full of misrepresentation, also deliberate misrepresentation. And it seems the term 'Native American' is misused even more than others.
