Cameo bracelet is obvious. There's five beautiful cameos in a bracelet. The maker is not as obvious. I am fairly certain it's Brevattato. The name is stamped on one of the links. My photo is awful. The BR???? ATO are absolute. The rest are faded. But, the tops are shown, and it could very well be Brevattato.

Does anyone know anything about Brevattato? What does the bracelet look like it's made of? I was thinking Bakelite.

Their gold jewelry is expensive. But, I see quite a bit that's pretty much junk.

I don't think this piece is junk (it better not be for the price I paid). But, I can't find any other Brevattato piece to compare it to. The cameos alone are worth the value I paid. But, I'd be interested in thoughts on it's value.

    THANK YOU!

Yup, the equivalent of patented, registered, deposee and DRGM.

Hmmmm looks like tortoiseshell to me, which was used in cameo jewelry and fineries, but I'd have to get a closer look. If it is, then I hope you purchased to love it forever because selling would be an absolute beast to do. Perhaps hold it up to the light to see what it looks like and if you can see any natural texture? If it's later, it could also be celluloid. I'm sure Bronwen and others will have more opinions to share.

That's what my wife thought also. But, I don't think you can stamp into shell. No, it's not for selling. I started my wife on collecting cameos in 1985. In 2007 her collection (about 150) along with all her jewelry was stolen. I'm getting her back into a nice collection, this will go with all her others. This is part of her new collection.

I know that's what the word means. So, it's not a company, it just means the manufacturer (unknown) patented the bracelet? Why would they do that?

That must have been devastating.:( I am glad you started a new (antique) collection, and a very impressive one too.
The design was registered or patented so it wouldn't be copied by other manufacturers without legal implications.

    Thank you.

That's so weird about the patent. The company didn't put their name on it, yet marked that it was patented. The clasp that holds it shut is unique. You screw it off. It's a beautiful piece. But, seeing that other items marked Brevattato are not expensive, I'm hoping I didn't over pay. Since the cameos are actually carved, I don't think I did. But, you never know.

A screw clasp as such isn't unique, but maybe this one is. Could you show us a photo?
Other patents or registrations say nothing about your bracelet. They say nothing about the value of your bracelet either.

    Here's a tortoiseshell comb from the V&A

Your wife's two collections probably show that she's spent a lot of time studying cameos and what they were made out of! You should point her our way!! We have an ongoing Cameos discussion thread that is here and super interesting for a collector, or she could post a new thread with some of her favorites for us to ooo and ahh over up close!

Anyway, she probably is aware that you don't stamp tortoiseshell, you mold or carve it, which we've been doing since before ancient Roman times because we didn't have plastic yet. You heat it up and then press it into a mold or can carve it like ivory. Here's a cameo of Queen Anne from the V&A that was made by pressing the tortoiseshell into a mold:

This is the best I can do with the photo.

My wife loves them. But, she's never done a bit of research. She just likes to look at them. I will take some photos and put them up at the cameo discussion thread. She personally doesn't use the internet or computer. She can barely use the cell phone.

Awww well at least she has you to help her out and you can relay what we say. It's nice to talk to other people who like the same thing you do. :D

Since it becomes plastic when hated, I see no reason you could not make an impression in it with a hot brand. It may be the clasp design that is brevettato.

Judging from the pieces in the new accumulation (the theft of the others must have been like a knife in the heart!) you have not fallen into this fallacy, but I want to emphasize that not all cameos that are hand carved shell are valuable; many are churned out that should never have been put on the market.

I see pieces like that all the time.

It has to have some uniqueness for me to even consider purchasing.

I bought these three at an antique shop today, and none will win any awards for greatness. But, the Jesus looking guy is pretty cool. I have no idea what's going on with the freaky hat or hair. It might actually be a man. The scene has some nice depth to it.

Hat-Hair gives me a Raphael vibe:

If those were for sale at the right price, I'd have bought both of them. The carving of the first is excellent. The second is just freaky, especially the hair.

The Raphael is one of my Mouhé pieces. The other is a grab from eBay. I recall the seller saying something like they found her very beautiful, if a little different.
