I was given this table top along w some free furniture someone was unloading....was told it's a mahjong table top. It has a vinyl like trim around the edge, felt bottom and lacquer or plastic like top. It's 36x36.

I couldn't find much on Google lens, does anyone have any insight? Should it have a base/legs? Or meant to sit on another table?

    If nothing else it's kinda pretty.....???? 20240611_175815_copy_1000x450.jpg 20240611_175807_copy_1000x450.jpg 20240611_175750_copy_450x1000.jpg 20240611_175825_copy_1000x450.jpg 20240611_175818_copy_1000x450.jpg

That's odd. It looks square in some photos and rectangular in others. Flat in some photos and sloped in others.

    It's all perspective, Debora...but I agree; weird.

That inlay makes me think Italian . Until the 60s card games and board games were exceedingly popular,so I could see this being the top of a table they could flip as needed.I think it would have had a base .

My first reaction is a top for a Japanese Kotatsu. In looking them up right now, I see mainly plain tops. However a friend of mine who was half Japanese had a similarly decorated one from his mother. Believe it dated to the 70s.

That could make sense. It would explain the quality of the reverse. Think they're typically a tad smaller though. You can check the standard sizes, which are in Metric. But given that the size of yours is precise and Imperial, the source is more likely Western.

I initially reported the size as 3' x 3', which was a mistake. It is actually 29.5 x 29.5 inches x 1 " thick....that's what happens when you have too much junk cluttering up the garage....

I think you're onto it Brad...thank you, this has been driving me nuts. The people randomly gave me this top, it was her late mother's house they were dispensing items from, and despite not being asian apparently everything in the house was asian inspired. They thought this was a mahjong table, and I did also think game table due to the green felt underside. However, this makes more sense as a top for a kotatsu table....no where on it do legs attach. Also, it did come in what looks like the original box which is written in japanese. I should shoot a pic of that as maybe it would translate a brand....
