Hi everyone. I request your assistance in identifying this brooch please. The clasp is a “Trombone clasp”, and I think the brooch is gold, but I just can’t read the hallmark clearly. I think one part of the hallmark reads “872AL”, but I can’t read the other part, and I can’t find any information on 872AL. Any information on the maker and design of the brooch will be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

The other mark that, to me, looked like OST, could be 750 upside down, i.e. 18 carat gold

    Welcome, Deb.
It is an Italian maker's mark, from the province of Alessandria.

The ebay seller's dating is a bit ambitious. The shape of the mark is 1944-68, and the style of the brooches is ca 1950s-60s imo.

Have you had a loupe on these marks?

Thank you. I thought that, but then this mark would be read upside down to the other mark. Is that normal?

I don't think it's common/as it should be (but I'm no expert...), but I think I've seen that on other jewelry on this site.

I assume Houseful is wondering if you checked with a loupe if there is anything written in that circled bit. It does indeed look like letters and/or numbers, but it could simply be scratches.

Thank you. Do you know the name of this particular maker by chance?

I don't. It is the 872nd registered maker in Alessandria, but unfortunately the numbers in my sources don't go that high.

Alessandria the province, not necessarily the city (if I'm not mistaken)
