Hi all, comments on this ‘dirty’ little oil on board please. I haven’t taken it out of the frame but I don’t think there’s a signature. I have been doing some searching (trying to identify the scene) and have concluded that it might be: Lindisfarne Castle and harbour,Holy Island? The whinstone hill of Beblowe craig. What do you think? Shape of the castle difference..

I like the simplicity/naivety of the painting (must have been an amateur) Was thinking maybe 1920-1930’s of so? Searching I did identify the framers (it looks like they have closedown but they were in business for a very long time) The frame is 52 x 36cm.

    Thank you for any comments

It looks like an artist's impression of St Michael's Mount to me, in Cornwall.

It does indeed look a lot like this painting of St Michael's Mount

Yes, my parents had one very similar to the one you posted. In 'real life' it isn't as high and forbidding as artists wanted it to be.;)

    I agree, St Michael's Mount.

Its funny, St Michael's Mount was in a crossword/quiz this morning.

Charming. But, yes... Not the work of a fully trained artist. Notice how everything floats against the background? Nothing has any visual weight. That contributes to its dream-like quality.

Make sense.Appreciate the comment and link. Right you are. Yes,it was 1945. Wasn’t sure when they started using that label. But I was thinking the painting looks older to me (so maybe it was framed a little later)

I think you're right. Earlier work with later frame.

Clever, clever you! And here's to the amateur artist who, long ago, had the cojones to (try and) copy a Turner watercolor. And then have it framed!
