Featured Perpignan garnet star just arrived!

It's a button but could be easily converted into pendant, slider or ring by attaching a bent metal string or safety pin!

Thank you do you know where this button would go when it was made? I dont think it's a normal one on a jacket or shirt, since that shape will make it difficult to button up?

 

Absolutely superb! That color of garnets (foiled too) is my favorite!!!
Some ornamental buttons, mainly on 18 and 19th century court or apparat costumes, were only sewn in series without a button hole, they were just... Non functional Ornaments.

 

Yes it would be difficult in daily use. I don't know how these were intended, but in general, buttons were not only made for use, but also to be decorative. Sometimes a jacket or vest would be worn open, or buttons would adorn the sleeves.

At the time this was made it was considered a very local piece, maybe even a fancy souvenir. Maybe a local museum in Perpignan has portraits with Perpignan garnet jewellery.
