I know nothing about jet.I bought a big lot of “jet” stuff a while back. I assume some is real and some isn’t. This is from a different purchase. Maybe I can learn something here before tackling the aforementioned lot. This cross is cool to touch not cold. The back is textured and has voids. Are the voids air bubbles outing to glass, or natural to jet as it transforms from wood to stone? Any obvious signs here I’m missing? Feel free to share Jet ID’ing tips! Drag it across a sheet of clean white paper, (printing paper), if it leaves a brown mark that indicates Jet.

Do you think someone tried to needle test the back which caused the voids?

The back of jet is usually polished, and this one also seems to be modelled, not hand carved. No need to needle test it imo

No mark! So I guess plastic (gotta percha) or glass.

Possible if it turns out to be a plastic.

I didn’t realize that gotta percha could be polished to a glass like shine. I’ve only knowingly encountered it on ambro/Dag cases and possibly combs. It’s been dull in those instances. I see some examples get pretty shiny while doing an image search. My cross really looks glassy and feels cool to the touch. Gutta percha wouldn’t be cool to the touch would it?

Dunno. I've never handled gutta percha. But sure someone here has and will know.
