Walking Stick Silver Collar

    I'm looking to get some better eyes on the marks on this walking stick.Londin mark and might be able to decipher the name.Curious though the lines around the hallmarks . 20240602_214226.jpg 20240602_214831.jpg

    HJ - Henry Johnston of Belfast. Succeeded by H Johnston Umbrellas Ltd.

    As this has a London hallmark it was most likely made by a London manufacturing silversmiths who had the band assayed on behalf of Johnston. What we loosely call a maker's mark is more properly a sponsor's mark.

    I thought it was interesting as I’ve never seen lines punched around the hallmarks like that.You can tell some marks by the shape of that stamp.

    Hallmarks on silver bands on sticks, umbrellas, etc. seem to occasionally develop lines like this around their borders. I have no idea why but here is an example of a London hallmark which shows similar changes.

    Thank you I’ve never seen it before and have had a variety of silver from a lot of countries.And thanks again to this site and others who replied always very helpful and a pleasure.
