Featured Original advertsing/sales proposal mock up for matches - WTH do I call it?

There was a box stuff from William H. Colgate, VP of Diamond Match Co. and a prolific match cover designer, in the haul my son got that I'm still looking at stuff from. The box contained hundreds of matchbook covers, salesman's samples of covers, a handmade sample book, letters, etc.

I spent a ridiculous amount of time sorting and trying to learn a little about the covers, etc., before I finally went on a collectors site to ask some questions. I didn't even get to ask, because one of the first things I learned on the home page is that collectors don't collect samples, or flats of matchbook covers, which is 85 % of what was in the box. It's too bad, because the sample covers and flats are very cool and sharp looking.

There were two of these hand done ad/sales proposals, this one done for Safeway Stores, and the other for Kroger Grocery & Baking. I believe they were done by W. Colgate himself, which may or may not add to their value.

Anyway, what do you call this? A proposal? A targeted ad? A mock up of either one of those? Something else?

Also, I have seen no indication that Match Cover collectors even collect items related to their main collecting interest. So are they worth listing???

Not sure what I'm seeing but not an ad. Is it a board on which the proposal has been affixed and the board then covered with a translucent sheet? An in-store merchandising proposal with a packaging proposal (the box) and a design proposal (the matchbook) developed for the Safeway buyer. If a one-off of the proposed matchbook cover has been created and affixed to the sheet, then that would be a mock-up. Scotties point toward 1930s. Really unlikely that company head would have spent his time doing this. Would have been developed by Sales department working with the art department. The objective is to take the humble match from a utilitarian object and make it a decorative/collectible one to increase sales. Is it done in pen and ink?

    Hi Debora -

No it's not done in pen and ink - the bottom sheet is a copy. Now that I think of it, these were probably made for existing customers when new designs came out, so the newest cover design was stapled on, and a customized paper was stapled on, then a translucent sheet with the customers name was stapled over the whole thing.

    How does that sound?

Yes, for existing customers. They're not selling in a new product; they're selling new designs with the objective of mass displays. Could certainly be a stock sheet that was updated with new designs as introduced. Colgate Studios was a division of Diamond Match. And according to this, William H. did design matchbooks. He must have been a V.P. at Colgate Studios and had a design background.
