With regard to the form, my wife says a vessel like that conveys a meaning of peace and safety.

I'm sure there is a hardness test, scratching the stone with something to see if the stone is softer or harder then the tool you are scratching with, But I don't know about those. I've had a gem tester for years so I use that.

If I didn't have one, I would take it to a jeweler for testing to be sure.

Sorry if I’ve caused some controversy, maybe this will be helpful…
I took a sharp Kershaw knife blade and I mention the brand so you have an idea of the hardness of the steel and scratched an A grade serpentine blank, you can see it easily scratched.

then using the same knife blade I made repeated attempts scratching the middle of this lower grade jadeite tiger and it did not leave a mark. I

Serpentine is a 3 to 6 in hardness the particular steel in this model blade is rated 4/10 so hardness of 4 if the same scale? Jadeite is 6.5 to 7 I guess to be safe check the hardness of the blade online first to be safe but I’d image most inexpensive blades would be fairly soft?

Yes, the Mohs scale applies to metals and glass as well as stone.
No need to use a knife though, we always discourage it. There are cheap testers available that test hardness on the Mohs scale. Look for cheap diamond testers, they test from 3-10 Mohs hardness.

Yep, thank you… I have much to learn, other than I don’t know better my reason for adding that was just to answer the statement of never seeing that. Alas, there are always consequences to ill thought hmmm well everything I guess, but posts in this case.
