A new box - did I get it right?

    Bought this box from Etsy, seller says walnut but it looks like coromandel to me. @808 raver What do you think? :smuggrin:

    And these two has exactly same dimensions!

    Just noticed there's inscription on the hinge: R.Moors Registered Sept 1845

    Looks like P. Moore on the hinge to my eye

    There was a Paul Moore & Co out of Birmingham making hinges in the mid-1800s

    I also found some patent info for the same company that matches the date on your hinges.

    Description:

    Useful Registered Design Number: 19.

    Proprietor: Paul Moore.

    Address: Birmingham, Warwickshire.

    Subject: Stop butt hinge.

    Category: Locks, Latches, Bolts, Fastenings, Lock Furniture for Doors, Safes, Strong-Boxes and Rooms.

    Date: 1843 Sept 27

    Seems to me it doesn't matter whether it is made from walnut, coromandel or rosewood, you've got something worth having.

    The darker bands on another box in my pics are made from rosewood, it does not has these tiger like patterns, and would be brighter in tone overall

    Yes agree, but feel lucky as I always want a coromandel box!

    Love the box.:happy: My vote goes to rosewood.
    My coromandel carvings have more straight, parallel lines. There are other tropical hardwoods that look similar to coromandel, it can be difficult to tell them apart.

    I think coromandel is right. There are some other exotic woods such as zebrawood that look similar but, given that this is an antique box, coromandel is most likely.

    Yes you can see the front panel (and two side panels not photographed here) has more parallel line patterns, depending on where the veneer was cut from?

    Well I'm just collecting a range of antiques for two years after I got a job, so 20? :joyful: And my wood box collection only starts in 2024
