Can anybody tell me what this is?

    I have no idea what this item could be or what it was used for and I have looked everywhere I can think of find information on it. It has no identifying marks either. It looks like a wooden suitcase but with a side that slides open. Strange to me.

    What is the size ?
    Could the side that slides be the top ?

    Its 20 inches long and about 9 inches wide. It looks the same on the other side except it doesn't open up.

    This is jogging my memory as having something to do with 19th century photography equipment. I used to manage the Southern Oregon Historical Society's collection of pioneer photographer Peter Britt, and it just looks familiar. Can't be more helpful than that I'm afraid.
