Butterfly Pattern Pottery Shard.jpg Butterfly Pattern Shard 1.jpg Butterfly Pattern Pottery Shard 2.jpg Could someone help me identify the time period and pattern of this piece? There is no maker's mark or identification of any kind on this piece. Found in the garden of an 1875 Italianate Mansion located in Bentonville, Arkansas. It is slightly curved so it could very likely be from a tea cup or something similar.

    Welcome @Lrosenba94,

I compliment you on your photos. Working in an archeology lab, I presume?

Though not my area, we have several members well versed in ceramics. Hopefully one will recognize the pattern. Please be patient, as we are an international forum and not everyone is here every day.

Thank you! I actually work at the Peel Museum and Botanical Garden located in Bentonville, Arkansas as the Assistant Museum Manager. This piece was found in our vegetable garden on the grounds.

Ah - knowing it is from an American site may be helpful.

Given Asian influence, I'd think Aesthetic Movement. The design appears to be painted and not transferred. Is that correct?

Yes ma'am. It does appear to me that it is painted on. Not transferred.

I’d say it actually is Asian, specifically Chinese, and eighteenth into nineteenth century. The style, clay body and the fineness are wrong for British wares of the time.

I think you're right. Not just "influenced by."

Thank you! This most definitely gives me a place to start my research on this piece. I agree that it does most definitely does have similarities to many Asian pieces of the time. I appreciate your information and insight.

The Ridgway Dado pattern is transferware. The design on the sherd is hand painted.

We stole those designs from Chinese wares. The Gotheberg pages are spot on for this sherd. Can you see it looks almost engraved?

It looks like and incised design with the colour applied globally and then removed to leave the residue in the design. I agree, likely Chinese or Japanese.
