So it is. Do they have experts you can ask? I think of it more as a theme park.

I thought so, but it never hurts to ask.

The Chinese have been producing a lot of fakes of European Antiquity and Byzantine glass over the last 20 yrs or so, I wonder if this is one of theirs.

 

It honestly doesn’t look fake to me, but I’m not holding it in my paw. And I don’t agree on vials not having trailing, either.

 

I think they might, as they also have a museum, and they work with 'Archeologiehuis Zuid-Holland'.
But as the Rijksmuseum van Oudheden said it won't be of that period, I don't think it will be usefull to contact them as well.
Now I've sent an e-mail to a glass museum (not the National Glass Museum, as they will most likely tell me to buy a ticket and come to one of their valuation days)

 

Maybe he just meant this type of trailing, or the combination of this type of vial and trailing.

 

What an interesting thread. Thanks for sharing the follow-up this far, Marote. I agree it is an interesting piece. Even the bead looks old to my eye. Hope this turns out to be a treasure.

(I lived abroad in Leiden from 1986-1988, so my ears perked up when I heard "Leiden".)

I agree, trailing was done in antiquity as well as on Frankish and Byzantine glass. But they could have meant the combination of trailing and the murrine slice, which makes it look like a necklace with pendant.

 

New update:
The glass museum was unable to solve the mystery. But the kind owner did give the name of an association of glassware collectors, so I will probably contact them as well.

You need someone who knows ancient glass. If only you were in London….!

Thank you for that info. I will also try to see if Anna & Kitty Laméris, the glass experts from that show, can help me.

And an update regarding the sculpted glass museum: They could only help if it was a signed piece.

 

Good idea. They don't deal with glass from antiquity, but we haven't a clue what your vase is, so why not.

As an aside, I met their father Frides Laméris a couple of times. Quite a character, with a wicked sense of humour. At the time I still had my bricks and mortar shop, so we're talking ancient history.

 

Have a weekend in London and take it to the British museum!
