Each page in this album measures 13 1/2" by 11" Each photo measures 9 1/4" by 6 3/4". There are 24 pages. 16 photos have an embossed stamp saying Copyright 1898 by C.E. Bolles, Brooklyn, N.Y. The other 8 are stamped C.E. Bolles, Brooklyn N.Y.

I am trying to figure out what event this parade is celebrating. They seemed to have Naval parades every other day in New York City, but the only two I've found so far in 1898 that had at least some of the boats shown here are The Peace Jubilee Naval Parade, and one for the Victory Fleet, which took place on Aug. 26, 1898.

The 9 ships in the album:
    • The New York (3 photos)
    • The Iowa (2 photos)
    • The Brooklyn (4 photos)
    • The Massachusetts (3 photos)
    • The Oregon (2 photos)
    • The Indiana (2 photos)
    • The City of Lawrence (1 photo)
    • The Sagamore (1 photo)
    • The Texas (1 photo)

I think this album must have been privately commissioned.

    Any help?

the dark multi star flag is at the head of several boats..... maybe those and the other flags could shed some light on the event !

That City of Lawrence looks like a disaster waiting to happen...

    Interesting album Book !!!;)

Those look like 46-star flags, if so the photos date between 1907 and 1912 if that's any help. If they're 45 star we're back 1896-1907, dead bang for a celebration/Review circa 1899/1900. The battleships were used in the Spanish-American war for sure, and the Sagamore still has sail rigging.

Bookahtoo-Nice volume,incidentally-do you own this piece ? One thing i've noticed (no surprise) book/ephemera dealers, generally being avid readers, research their items as well as anyone.
*Wik-'She was the first vessel to win the America's Cup Trophy twice in a row (a record not equaled until Interpid's back-to-back wins in 1967 and 1970.
I suspect the America's Cup fame helped the sale price on the Christie's photo-competitive yachting enthusiasts would be a good clientele to have.

The photos are copyrighted 1898, so I'm going with that date.

@bosko69 - my son owns this - I do research for him because I like to, and I'll probably be selling it for him too.

Are you able to access The New York Times' Time Machine? There's an article on the "Coming of the Squadron" scheduled for August 20, 1898 on the Hudson River. A list of the six participating vessels of the North Atlantic Squadron is in the right hand column. They were joined by a number of "excursion steamers and tugs" which were hired by private parties.

Apologies. Think attachment above too small to easily view. This should work better.

I think Deb hit it. But try and decipher the flag forward on C.O.L., that probably names the occasion.
