It would totally trash a perfectly good pin in this case.

Aquitaine Is What It IS! But NEVER BORED!

@JewelryPicker, I 'blew up' the Boar mark that was inside the purse, if it helps or adds anything.....

Helluva score on the gold love token/pin/coin. Whomever didn’t outbid you on that is an idiot. What kind of silly bidders let it go for $20!?!?!

Heck, it would scrap for 10x that on a really bad day.

obviously everyone else missed it. I actually won that box for $6. The lot with the mesh purse and other sterling items, I paid $12 for that.

it’s usually a pretty competitive online auction, with gold & silver running right up to their scrap values. Sometimes blasting way beyond scrap price for items not worth more than scrap. Any time I go in for preview there’s multiple people examining the lots of jewelry with loupes & scales.

the purse got missed because the markings were crudded over. I really can’t give a legitimate excuse why the coin pin got missed by other bidders, although the auction staff missed it too

    win some, lose some

it’s a pretty good feeling when you spot something that everyone else missed. Years of learning a hobby pays off big sometimes

the flip side though is I have probably missed many items through the years, and someone else is happy because they found it. The good part about that is, you’ll never know that you missed it, so there’s never cause to get upset

All good points. Good on you for looking closer. Once you’ve seen a bunch of little gold filled disc pins with monograms on them I guess you just assume every little gold disc pin with a monogram is probably gold filled or plated and you stop flipping them over. What a fantastic score. Pretty damn hard to find bullion level gold below melt, let alone wayyyy below melt.

that’s a good point. Though I scoop that stuff up too. My scrap guy pays better on GF than sterling. I’ll pick up GF all the time, and drop it in a bag. Once that 1 gallon bag is full, it’s scrap time and I’m always pleasantly surprised with the payout

Nice! I save it too but I’ve not accumulated near that much. I guess you’re buying much more volume than me. Story would check out based on your name, lol. The times I’ve gotten big heavy gf chains I sell them on eBay with the word scrap in the title and do quite well. The junky monogrammed stuff I’ll scrap someday though. Good for you! Congrats on the coin win. I collect love tokens. This isn’t as ornate as I like but god damn is it more golden than the rest of mine.
