TIA. Can anyone identify my green MCM lion planter? No markings but there’s something familiar about it. Approx. 12” x 8” (across face) x 8.5” height at head. Planter bowl diameter approx. 4 7/8” IMG_2024-05-06-213942.jpeg IMG_2024-05-06-213908.jpeg IMG_2024-05-06-213852.jpeg

TY How funny. I pulled it planted out of a garden! Wonder who the maker was…

Rethinking that I may want to fill it with M&M’s and put it on my coffee table!

It may be Doranne. I'll look in my books in a bit.

I bet an oil lamp font would fit in there nicely.

Found this lion in Ermagene Westfall's 1993 COOKIE JARS Book II, Doranne of California, p.61. (Dande) Lion: Unmarked. BTW, my grandmother collected cookie jars and had hundreds of jars ranging from Roseville, Twin Winton, McCoy, etc. to hobbyist ceramics. She bought any jar she found, some jars without lids and some lids without jars...and only once did she find a lid and jar match! So use as candy jar, planter, oil lamp...;)

Many thanks! Have to admit I never considered it wasn’t a planter since I found it planted. Interesting to know it is vintage CA pottery and the maker.

IMO the lion still looks like a planter but so do the pigs…

ok....1st impressions are powerful & u saw it with a plant in it....:)
    I didn't....
I saw that lovely lions face......which is meant to be front and centre and would hide the plant behind it .... so, not a planter....imo..

& the pigs are cut up plastic bottles.....with a you tube vid, on how to make them...

so ya...they are planters......but didn't start out that way !

put the m&m's in it ...and see if it stops looking like a planter ...;)..:playful::playful:

Respectfully, still disagree. The opening is small and deep-IMO getting cookies out of it would be a pain. Not arguing that it started life as a cookie jar but IMO it works better as a planter than something holding food. As far as cute faces go, zillions of talavera and other types of cute faced animal planters around that were made as such. A fast google of animal planters brings them up in all sizes. The flowers in mine were not hiding the face-it was screaming for attention. IMG_1380.jpeg

First impressions are powerful. I once bought a bull figurine with his name "Alonzo" scrawled on his side. Years later a friend correctly IDed the scrawl as "Mexico."
