    I think that is an antiaircraft cannon, the guy near the sights has headphones on so he might be listening for subs after a depth charge and my dad was going to plug them if they surfaced.

    In the early 40's he used to leave the East Coast near Lowestoft under the cover of darkness and sail to a mile off the Dutch coast in a motor torpedo boat (MTB)
    It had a Bofors cannon fitted and he used to fire at German goods trains and troop carriers.
    Sadly even though he hit a few of the enemy he also thinks he might have killed or injured some Dutch people, we will never know.

    Whilst this was going on his future wife, (my mother)and her family were getting bombed out of house and home.

    1945, My parents wedding whilst still at war.

    None of this "when the War is over" garbage for those two! Knew a little too well that "later" might translate to "never".

    I think that is an antiaircraft cannon
    the round sights would suggest as much..... ack ack ???
    I luv the way those shoulder mounts make one part of the gun !!!

    I already liked these photos and stories, but after reading the sad news in the Rants and Raves thread, these become even more special.
    My condolences to you and to the rest of the family and your dad's friends.

    Makes me think of Joe McCarthy, but I do think it's just a look of the time. If people went to a club back then (especially a well known club, there would be a photographer taking souvenir memento photos just like there would be a cigarette girl.
