I don't think I have ever put this up before. I am going to be selling a bunch of things because my boys do not want "All this junk". Anyway this bowl is 9 1/4" wide at the top. With pedestal it is 8 1/2" high. I find no information on the web. I do not know exactly where I got it. Probably at an estate sale in NY several years ago. Any help would be appreciated. There are two small marks on the bottom of the pedestal. Just trying to find a basic value. old bowl 3.jpg old bowl.jpg old bowl 2.jpg

Is this ceramic, pottery or glass?

I believe it is ceramic, quite possibly porcelain so never mind. I don't know enough about it to even ask for help. Thanks anyway.

Ditto-I like that wing nut construction. (takes a 'wing nut' to know a wing nut)

I'm going out on a limb here, but will guess mid-third of the 19th c. In the late 18th/early 19th c open weave bowls were made and I think to hold chestnuts. I stand to be corrected on that, though. Depending on size, this would be a nice bowl to hold fruit.

You might try the word compote to look up your item too.

I did try compote. Did find some that had attached pedestal but quite a bit newer than what I have here. Thanks for your help though.

I've seen this type of bowl before, complete with wingnut. I believe this is a fruit bowl, made of porcelain and likely made in France. Many I've seen are described as Old Paris or old Haviland. It does look French to me. It's just lovely.
