Featured Indian miniature painting

Just thought I'd share my new purchase and ask does anybody else marvel at the minute work of Indian miniature Indian painting? All of the ones I have are on ivory. I suspect the subject might be a little strange but camel wrestling was a big thing in that part of the world back then. The frame is new but the painting is old.

 

Oh BTW the frame is 9" x 6"

Here is my miniature Mughal painting. A little 'primitive' in technique compared to the above but I love it! The painting is approx. 1.25 x 1.75 in.

 

Fantastic, I think the technique differs because they are from different countries. I think yours is a Persian work whereas mine are Indian, of course all this type of art originates from Persia. TBO some Persian work I wish I could afford

 

BTW the camels wasn't a lot of money, Mughal painting is very good value for money, I suspect it won't last long.

 

Thank you for telling me. Can you tell from the style of the painting/technique or is it simply the way the subject matter is portrayed?

 

The reason for me saying " good value for money " is because unlike of styles of painting not everyone can do it, the work is so fine a very steady hand is needed even if you have the artistic bent to pull it off. BTW the camels painting is 3" x 2" in size

 

The style and the dress. Persian/Iranian souvenir painters love those random tufts of bushes or greenery to suggest a landscape. The costumes are Iranian or Turkish.
Yours isn't antique, which Mughal paintings are. It is also likely to be painted on bleached camel bone, rather than Indian ivory.

While these souvenir paintings are always charming (I have a few as well) they are not of the same quality as the old style Persian, Mughal period, and later Indian and Pakistani miniatures.
Old style Persian miniatures are still being made, but they don't come cheap. Good quality Indian and Pakistani miniatures are also still being made.

 

It's a very good point, the quality isn't the same in new works unless you are paying large amounts. It's reasonable to say I'm a novice when it comes to dating and valuing these works, I normally wait until they are a part of a box that I know is antique. I have some in frames but again I know they are tourist pieces from the 1880's-1900's.

I am blown away by the miniatures of that region. I have one quality one, boggles the mind to look at. I quite literally am bad at drawing stick figures and circles. My lack of artistic ability makes them all the more wondrous to peruse. I love the bizarre and grotesque and your camel wrestling painting is up my ally. I’ll have my antennae tuned to finding one of my own at some point in this lifetime.

I think what you have said about your drawing ability matches mine and I wonder if that's why I'm so enamored with them? I would love to see any you have. I went looking for them on ebay yesterday and typed in "miniature painting" and 39,000 came up, I didn't look all the way through but I must have done 10,000 and only found 5, 3 of which were over priced, one was a bargain and the other was fantastic, here is an image
