It was suggested to me that I should check a brass/metalware forum to see if anyone knows about this piece. I posted it in the glass forum, but people seem to think it's more of a brass piece? Sorry for double-posting in the forums, just trying to get some help.

Vase is glass, pedestal is brass, liner in vase is brass too (I believe)
I'm hoping to learn where this was made and about what time period. The brass seems very nice in quality.

Very striking piece. It The top's reminiscent of the 'Aesthetic' movement, the pedestal seems a mix of Victorian w/ a geometric touch of Deco.
Someone here w/ more knowledge will be along to help.
If you can GENTLY take the piece apart,I'd pop it under a bright light & start hunting for marks (& they can be teeensy !).

you seem to be getting more play on your original thread......... sometimes here, u have to be patient for more members to come around , as it's a world wide site, and were not always here all the time.

DITTO-Traffic here can get crazy-great things get booted quickly off the 'Recent Topics' column sometimes.
    Things can get missed.
PS-I try not to Post multiples all at once so as not to crowd everyone else out.

I was worried about that. I was on another ID site for glass and several people there seemed miffed that I was posting something with a lot of metal… I have also posted things that never get answered, so I figured maybe I would have better luck if I tried another forum.

it used to be easier to get answers and do research online— but over the past decade it seems that most searches result in nothing but commerce results (selling sites). Sorry for bothering everyone!!

I thought you were scolding me for being impatient. I was criticized on another group (not on *this* website) for posting a piece that a couple people in that group thought should not have been considered a primary glass piece. There are some very helpful people here, which is why I'm here. :cat: It just felt like a lot yesterday evening to be told that in one group and then here to be told that I needed to be patient when I was just hopeful about broadening my search.

All that said, I still have no clue where/when this thing is from, lol. Will stand by and stand down and see if maybe I get lucky. Thanks for your reply.

Ok, I got some answers about this piece!! There was an appraiser this past weekend at my local vintage mall, so I brought it with me to ask about. He identified it as mercury glass, and in outstanding condition. He said it was most likely Bohemian and from the late 1880s/early 1890s. It was probably part of a set (I can't remember what he called the type of set) which would have included two of these, a decorative bowl, and perhaps candle holders. He said he is 98% sure it is a jardiniere, as the patina inside the brass is more consistent with it being exposed in the air (oxidation) and the putty at the bottom is consistent with floral display pieces from the time. An oil lamp would have had the insert in it that would have kept the patina inside the piece more consistent and less oxidized. He also said the size of it is not be consistent with an oil lamp from that era.
So happy to have some "closer to concrete" information about this! SO happy I grabbed it off that stocking cart at the thrift for $7.99!
