My family once had a quilt with all the names; my grandmother and a bunch of her friends and relatives had each made a square.
There were never enough for a whole quilt, so it was never assembled, but long after her death my sister added borders and extra strips between the squares, and made a quilt of it. She called it a "friendship quilt" I think; it went to her children when she passed on.

    GaleriaGila Hola, y'all!

That is so wonderful... I wish these quilts could be with their original families, but... they changed hands too many times. But I'll get them a good home, one way or another.

Sometimes families die out too. In that case, it's just as well if the pieces are sold to people who love them. I once scored a whole box of 1930s dresden plates, sewn by hand, that someone had made but never appliqued onto a quilt. Sold them on Ebay to someone who was thrilled to get them and was going to finish the project.

    GaleriaGila Hola, y'all!

    Awwwwwwwwww... I love that story!
Here's the update on my two. I went to ask the original seller (sort of a neighbor, a few streets away) a few questions about the quilts (following up on some suggestions from this forum), only to find that she was distraught to have sold them after learning from her husband that they were family-related. So she has her quilts back and I have my 30 bucks. Happy ending after a detour, thanks to y'all's questions/suggestions.

    Hi Gila,
How nice of you to return the quilts. You will be blessed for that.

Just to play the devil's advocate....if she was so distraught ....why didn't she or he seek you out and offer to buy them back ??

the ratty one is from down South... the lady told me that and I forgot. I'll have a look at the friendship quilts, definitely. The seller was a neighbor, so I'll ask her if she knows where it was done.

She sold em to ya......fer...not much......the hubby comes along and tears her a new one for selling family history....fer cheap.....without his knowing about it....

    That's all I'm getting at......

That....and if she was really torn up about the loss.....she should have offered you double ....as a gesture.....of your good will .....to get them back !

Or so I would surmise !

I think you got more in return than you would have realized in possibly selling them. I imagine the seller had no idea where to find the buyer to contact them and get them back. So presumably all is well in the seller's household, and they always make more stuff and more money. Bravo!
