Picked up this Elgin for $100 gambling on a mystery hallmark. XRF analysis shows it is solid 14k excluding the inside cover lid so roughly 25 grams of 14k. I can't quite figure out the marking however. Can anyone help me figure out what it is?

Hmm must be thick gold fill because it definitely came up as 14k, oh well! Thank you!

Looks like wear through spots in your pics. There will also be a brass or steel ring around the inside of the case too.

I really don’t know very much about clocks or watches but I think Elgin are an American watchmaker, I’ve looked one up before. That movement doesn’t look as though it goes with the case - for a start it’s turned 90 degrees, I don’t think I’ve ever seen a [pocket watch where the 12 isn’t aligned with the winder. The outer case looks like brass but the inside with the stamp gold filled but that could just be wear and tear. It seems you can also check the serial number here I think https://pocketwatchdatabase.com/guide/company/elgin/serial-number-lookup
