I have two pieces of Chinese furniture that I need help ID'ing. The first one is an altar/console. The second is some kind of a decorative shrine? With shelves.
If anyone knows how old they are, what they're made of, how much they're worth (or anything really lol) please let me know :) Many thanks 20240124_084815.jpg 20240124_083925.jpg 20240124_083908.jpg View attachment 479352

    Hello :)
    I'm in Colorado, USA
I got them from an old roomate who left em behind, I've had them a couple years.
The console is about 3ft tall, 5ft across.
The shelf thing is 5 feet tall, 3.5 feet across.
I wasn't able to find any markings unfortunately :/

The table could be 100 years old or 10.Theyve been making those pretty much the same way for 1000 years. It does look like theres some age to it. Now that cabinet might be something special. Do wait for others to chime in.

Interesting! Do you know what kind of wood they're typically made of?

The first item is a shrine table or altar table. It's where you pray to your ancestors, and where you might place the shrine-cabinet (if you have one) or place a censer and stone name-tablets, etc (if you don't have a cabinet).

As mentioned, these are still made today.

The second piece looks like a shelving unit for housing & displaying decorative objects - porcelain, jade, etc. I'm not sure it has any real religious / familial significance.

The second piece looks similar to one that my SIL's parents own. If so, it's basically just a really nice shelving/display unit. I have seen others which are larger, others smaller. This looks to be on the larger side of medium.

According to what she told me, her parents bought it at a local antiques shop. Sadly I don't have a photograph of it, but it looks a bit like yours. Theirs is much smaller, though, maybe 2/3 or half the size of yours.

Thank you! I never would have guessed it to be an altar...
Any guess as to when the second piece was made? Or what kind of wood it's made of?

They're often used as side-tables or occasional / hallway tables these days, but they were originally meant for altars / shrines. Some of them can be really really REALLY fancy.
