As to the original photo, the black line seems to continue between her lips, so I wonder if it’s a wound after all, and perhaps a voilette.

If it were such a heinous wound, it looks like it’s still stitched and fresh, and not healed into a scar yet. Setting aside the ongoing pain from such a devastating wound, that would have been caused very violently and traumatically, from a purely vanity perspective, I doubt she’d go out in public all dressed up like that looking like that, and pose for a formal photograph. Photographs back then were fairly rare. A wedding might be the only time a woman had her photo taken. Heck, when I had braces as a teenager, I didn’t like having my photo taken. There are no known photos of me wearing headgear, either. And…that’s not even in the same league as violently inflicted, massive and painful facial disfigurement, with fresh cuts and stitches. Once a wound like that heals, then a woman would use a lot of makeup to cover it up.

Actress Carole Lombard went to great lengths to hide her facial scars. Even today, actress Tina Fey tries to make her facial scar less obvious.
