I'm just going through some of my Dads stuff, there is a demob case full of B&W photos and documents.

This photograph was taken at Jack Dempsey's bar NYC around 1944-45, the 2nd person from the left is my Dad.

He was a WWII Royal Navy chief petty officer, he travelled from England on the Queen Mary to NYC, it was being used as troop carrier and was heavily protected as it zig zagged across the pond.
He stayed in NYC for 5 days with a skeleton ship crew before getting a sleeper train to Halifax, Nova Scotia.

    More to follow.

Dad looks like the one we should be researching. The other two look dowdy in comparison.

I can't imagine my Dad paying $1 to have a photograph taken with a nobody, $2 even, because there's two identical photos.:D
Maybe he got the other guy to pay.

They travelled up to Halifax to pick up a new ship that Canada had built for us and stayed in Lockeport I believe.

Some member(s) of the French Canadian Vichy sabotaged the ship by putting sand in the pistons so they had to wait in Canada for 6 weeks until it was repaired.

A few months later he did the whole journey again to pick up another ship. April 1945.
This time before the ship was signed over they took it out on sea trials and a German U-Boat surfaced nearby and surrendered, it was the last days of the war.

Here's a shot of the U-Boat crew prisoners in Shelburne.

Here's a couple more shots of Dad, very poor photographs taken with a Baby Brownie

I think he was operating a canon in this one or even a depth charge device, ciggie in mouth.

    Some more undated.

Ya know... Jack Dempsey's wasn't a society hang-out; it was more a popular Times Square tourist spot. And when your father visited, Jack Dempsey wasn't even there; he was in the service. Perhaps he ran into some fellow Brits far from home?

He did have a photograph alongside a man and woman and his skipper, it was signed on the back Best wishes Mr & Mrs Al Capone, Don't know if it was them or not, its a lot of years since I saw it.

It seems to have gone missing or I havn't found it yet.

A joke, I'd think. Al Capone was released from prison in 1940 and lived until his death in 1947 with his wife in Florida. He was in poor health as he suffered from late stage paresis (which is a nice way of saying syphilis.)
