Featured Why does this get so addicting?

I basically get frustrated anymore when I don't score another great find. I can't be the only one who feels this way, lol.

 

It's addicting because it's the thrill of the hunt.

I've been a fisherman my whole life. There've been periods of more addictive fishing--- going every day, for example, when I was in my early 20's.

In fishing, you search, you hope, you sometimes catch some little ones, and every once in a while.... boom! A giant salmon or steelhead!

I'm convinced that antiquing does all the same things for me, hits all the same 'dopamine releases': most of the time, nothing, some of the time, something, and then every once in a great while... boom! A Margaret Tafoya pot for $60!! Let's go!

 

Its especially bad when you find a real score (like my Russian(?) spoon) .Then the jones is twice as bad !

 

gotta add that finding things is great, but sharing here with like minded folk, makes it more special

i got really high before fishing once, don't recommend it

I'm still looking for my 4th Eagle......it'll come..or it won't ....it's the journey though that matters !

 

Yeah-- the really high part is after the fishing...

...and maybe one beer during a round of golf. Any more, and there goes my short game!

 

happy ending though, the rivers are empty because all the super trawlers stop any fish from getting through.......... phew

 

Two years ago I gave up my booth in the antique mall, due to the fact that I wasn't making any profit.
It was a relief, but I also felt very sad. I was in mourning over it, and it took a long time to realize that I didn't have to go out every weekend searching for items to put in my booth.

When I had the booth, I was obsessed with getting to every thrift store and yard sale that I could find. I worried that I would miss all the great things that I knew were out there.
I was putting a lot of pressure on myself.

These days, I can drive by a thrift store without worrying that they have a Ming vase with a $2.00 price tag on it.
It is liberating.

 

Kind of like the Ill Wills and their sorting crews; anything good gets sucked off before we're allowed to bait a hook. I don't fish, but the wild high of finding a major score... I go fishing for those.

Sometimes it's not the big high; it's the hit in the face of opposition. I found a sterling bracelet for a buck today in a "junk bag". The junk bag was in the local ReStore after their "expert" went though everything first. She had a "valuable" tidbit plate priced at $15. (no-account American 1960s) Go figure.

I know what Stracci means about the pressure being off though. There have been some estate sales lately that I would have gone to if I were still selling on line. Since I'm not and either my car or I wasn't feeling up to it, I stayed home.

 

i dont expect anything good from thrift/charity shops anymore, just get pleasantly surprised when i find something

sometimes its hard on the eyes going into them

but theres still other avenues to buy. nowadays some things priced in antique shops are cheaper than charity

 

and at least you can haggle

 

Provided of course one has antique shops to check. I have some around, but I've become addicted to Berner Brothers Antiques on Youtube, and all of them would fit into one of their five buildings with room to spare.

 

i get like that at the start of a car boot when the crowds are bustling to get in, its not a particularly nice feeling, and makes you irrational

 

I don't know but I am jonesing for the start of yard sale season around here. Which should be any weekend now! I do think it is a hit of dopamine for sure when you find something good. Good and dirt cheap, even better.

 

There's an indoor tag and vendor sale next week that I hit every year. I'm jonesing hard.
