    charlie is a forum hog

same lady, same planet, different price (£5)

as i bought 2 other pieces the lady said i could have this for a fiver because of the damage, and thought what the hell, i quite like it

    its quite a large size

thought the backing was holding it together, but was loose, and looks like it has been repaired ?

but its stable which is better than it being held together

be interested to know who the lady with peacock? is

    guessing late 19th, early 20th ?

    any thoughts appreciated

(this was all from one stall, and just the start of my fun yesterday :woot:;))

Another nice find, charlie.:) Looks late 19th.
Yes, it is damaged, but I see bids go up even for damaged cameos, as long as the main image is intact.
    The Roman Goddess Juno imo.

thats great to know, thanks Aj

i wouldn't have put a lot of money down on something damaged, but im definetly not a no damage guy, when something has charm

and is cheap of course :)

Definitely Juno...and a nice unique depiction of her. You don't normally see the peacock too! I definitely would have bought her for $5. Probably all us cameo fans would have, just to give her a proper bath! :woot: Even though she doesn't look like solid gold or silver, you'll still definitely make a nice profit as she's a more unique depiction, large, and 19th c. The damage is unfortunate, but I've bought cracked before because the image was good. The frames usually hold them pretty well.

A really nice find, for sure!

You've already been given good guidance, helmet shell, Juno/Hera and her peacock. They are her signature bird.

In the photo of the back, #4, I think I see a patch of missing shell but I don't notice it in any other pic. Are my eyes deceiving me? If you do not feel any movement of the cameo in the frame, she's probably good for another 100 years.

Think your estimate of age is spot on.

hi bronwen, thanks for the info.
no, your eyes aren't deceiving you, in pic no 4 thats the brown backing (paper type) that was placed over the back of the cameo

i say paper, but looking at it its too greasy smooth, might even be another piece of shell thats been placed over the top ?

can see the confusion now ;)

Might be a bit of old waxed paper? I haven't seen one with a backing unless it was made for a compartment, but that doesn't mean the old ones never had one...could be they just fell off over time?

yeah tougher than that though, almost plastic in rigidity

I don't know exactly what the material on the back is - card stock of some sort? - but think it was placed by someone worried about the crack as a kind of reinforcement.
