Mystery Rattan Bamboo Canteen ???

    Once again, another flea market find that I have never seen anything like it before. I think it may be some type of tribal canteen? It’s about 14 inches tall and appears to be quite old. The carrying strap is also rather odd? Any clues on age or origin???

    Certainly looks like it. Not something I have encountered before.

    Here is some more information:

    Ara Palang, the ancestor of the hip flask

    Ara palang is a bamboo container used by the Bhutanese as a wine container for many centuries. It is decorated with woven Yula and stitched well with cane thread on top and bottom. The people in eastern Bhutan are widely known for using it to store and offer alcohol to their guests even to this day. Some people use it as a decorative item in their homes.
