In that case, I guess given your wide and long experience it would be beneficial for me and also other readers to consider your suppositions and explanations as the most plausible ones. And to just consider my comments and reflections on the topic as mere conjectures , though keeping the topic in mind to check further on this interesting issue especially if other information becomes available to further shed light.     Just curiosity about the subject. I'm no expert. I like old prints and there are a multitude of techniques out there that are unknown to me. People do like color and printers have always put a lot of effort into providing affordable images as true to the originals as possible. You're certainly correct in encouraging people to pay attention to their work.

    Indeed old prints and their history is quite fascinating. I think the long evolution of prints has been quite non-linear and varied (also region dependent) and that poses difficulty for art historians to have a unanimous and coherent structure in explaining its progress and the years involved. In the world of prints there is always something new to learn.
