I have reached out to 10 places already trying to get 2 replacement spindles made to replicate the one in the attached pic. No luck yet. I know that's not a thousand in revenue for someone, but geez.

Also, can anyone possibly tell what kind of wood it might be? Mahogany? Cherry? Other?

See if your local schools have a shop class.

@Tiquer, I was thinking also, someone who does woodworking/wood turning! Just posting your image FULL SIZE....which helps everyone to help YOU!! Could be Mahogany as it's known for use in furniture of all sorts!

There's a college in northern Vermont, my niece looked at it, with a woodworking major. I bet half the senior class could make something like that. Just don't ask me the name of the school.

I asked my husband who is pretty handy with furniture repairs. He suggested drilling a hole in each part, putting a small dowel inside and finishing with wood glue and stain etc.

If you can’t get the spindles in place after you’ve fixed it, it gets a little more complicated, but that would be true with new spindles as well.

The wood might of course be so old and brittle it couldn’t be repaired like that.

Thanks, all. The one in the pic was already repaired once the way that has been mentioned here, so I don't know if that could be done again. Also, that would still leave me with sourcing 1 more.

    That's what I would do.

There is a hobbyist workshop near us where retired woodworkers etc love to do all sorts of repairs. They have the tools to turn wood, and anything else that needs doing on a non-industrial level. Maybe look for something similar near you?

Thanks! Mountain Woodworker has not replied to emails, and I haven't had time to call them. The other place I will need to try, thx!

I also have another company replying to me this AM. Just wish I knew what wood this was, told them mahogany, oak, or cherry.

Does look like it could be mahogany but maybe seeing the whole chair would help identify the wood.

Where, pray tell, were the spindles on this Savonarola chair?

    I’d think walnut.

They run parallel with the arms and provide the support to the U-shaped bases.

Thanks! The wood appears to be reddish brown, but I'm no carpenter.

I'll probably need to go on Antiques Roadshow to ever get any further Intel on this piece.

We did that (drilling hole in each piece) with an old Card Table that was DH'S mother's....tricky, but about 25 years later.....it's still hold up well!!!

Someone already did that once on the spindle, so I'd have to try digging the dowel out. Even if I do that though, I am still missing one :(

I am really enjoying learning about this chair, though. There are apparently ones like it called North Wind chairs!

Yours is not a north wind chair.
North wind refers to a carved face which is a fierce looking mask from which the 'wind' blows in different directions.

The north wind can appear on any type of item, including furniture.
