I ran through my local auction for a preview for tonight’s sale

they have a pocket watch that I believe has a 14k case. The only mark I could find is tiny and at first I thought it was the French 18k Eagle, but under magnification that proved incorrect. I still kinda see the eagle, but in reality I have no clue what it is. I presume it’s European.

    any help?

From this angle it looked more like

but I can indeed see an eagle in it as well (and haven't been able to find that mark)

It could be a Swiss bear mark, in which case it would be gilded, not gold. The Swiss bear is an old mark for .875 silver.

    Could we see the watch?

it is a Swiss watch, and I did look at the Swiss marks. The bear is a possibility

The silver bear mark comes in sets of 3, so I should look closer for 2 more…if it’s the silver bear

I didn’t take a full photo of the watch itself, but did get a shot of the inner cover (it’s a key wind) so I could research it. The outer case has the mark, not the inner cover

The Bears for reference (this is not the watch case in question)

Opening bid (absentee) was $110. I bid $120 and the absentee bid went to $130. I stopped

a was not able to get any better photos of the mark and did not find any other marks other that case #s and service marks.

the possibility of the bear scared me off at that price.

    thanks everyone for your input

Aquitaine Is What It IS! But NEVER BORED!

I KNOW it wouldn't make sense, but I thought it looked like an ant eater as well as a bear!!! Enhancedupload_2024-3-4_11-32-53-topaz-denoise-enhance-4x-sharpen.jpg

Upon closer examination last evening, it appeared as though that “c” shaped right side of the mark was actually closed, but worn. Not that it matters much now, someone else either had the mark pegged or was more willing than to take a chance on it
