    Hi-
Can you tell me if this young boy is a Hassidic Jew? Are the sidelocks and garments indicative of that? And what do you think might be the date of this portrait? Measures 8-3/4" by 5-3/4". Stamps on the right front margin are a crest and New York Studio. Any thoughts about this picture are welcome. Regards. DSCN6685.JPG DSCN6686.JPG DSCN6687.JPG DSCN6688.JPG

    Agree. Ringlets, not payots.

Figtree3 What would you do if you weren't afraid?

I'm going to guess just slightly later, broad range of 1890-1910.

@Lew Fisher , can you make out the studio name? I can't, from your photos.
Some of that type are very hard to see. If you hold it at an angle to a light source, like the sun, a lamp, a flashlight, you may be able to make it out. It may be possible to figure out the dates the studio was in business.

It's simply called New York Studio. I know the photo of the mark is poor. Easy to see in real life though.

That would be extremely difficult to find! Well, it was an idea...

I had no luck. For the reasons one can imagine.

I tried for a little while, too.

Agreed, not payot, plus he doesn’t seem to be wearing any head covering, either. Just a boy with curls.

Interesting Fleur de lis design on his shirt. I wonder if that’s some family or school design.

Yes, but he’s not wearing it. The point of wearing a head covering is to keep it on all of the time. Observant Jews didn’t and don’t take their head coverings off for photographs.

I didn’t realize how popular the ringlets were back then.
