I tried that as a search term but it doesn’t work. Pulls up wooden utensils.

 

I thought we could introduce it as a new term, but didn't think of those wooden ones.

 

So you're saying that period catalogs, advertisements, etc. published by the manufacturers and/or retailers, contained so many incorrect pictures and descriptions of their own products, that it's just common knowledge they can't be relied on? Apparently I'm just clueless, but not so much that I believe an 'unknown source' has validity when they say that rounded ends and lack of notches differentiate butter knives from fish knives - I could post period catalog pages showing both pointed and rounded tip butter knives side by side on the same page, but that would just be foolish on my part, since it would just be more unreliable information...

I am done here, this truly has been a waste of my time...

I’ll go off on another tangent for just one post: went to a local museum that has an extensive Rene Lalique collection and there were several glass and jewelry items with pinecone/pinebranch motifs. Lovely, lovely jewelry! Reminded me of the pinecone etc discussion.

Especially as the museum also has antique Persian ceramics and tapestry with pomegranates and lotus flowers and tulips. No pineapples, though. Or poppies. It was funny how things that looked like pomegranates where sometimes identified as lotus and vice versa. The guard could offer no explanation, just pointed to the display notes.

Maybe that depends on how a former owner identified them?

It wasn't in her job description to know. She just needs to make sure visitors don't run off with a priceless Lalique.

The guards wear a shirt that says Ask Me so I did. She started telling me abou the symbolism of various flowers…

Back to the subject matter of the thread. I should’ve let the the thread die a natural death, but thought asking about the correct word to describe “the scoop” was innocuous. So it goes. :-(

Ask a guard a question and get the answers off the cards! They aren't paid enough to go get a PhD in art history.

I've never cooked it either, but you can bet my Jamaican neighbors have. Or at least they ate it as kids. There are a decent number of Portuguese and Brazilians around too.

 

I’m guessing they employ starving artists or young students of art history as museum guards here ( there is one in every room).They are often quite bored-looking young girls and really happy if someone asks them something.

I worked as a guard/guide in an old church when studying, and days could feel really long if no one wanted to hear what I was supposed to tell them. I also worked in a churchyard, tending to graves. Not too many visitors, not to mention residents, were talkative there either.

P.S. If anyone is still interested in butter knife blade forms, I found a couple of more mid 19th C sterling knives that describe them as having “curved” blades in the same sense as I used the word. I’ll add pics or links if.

I’m a writer and a compulsive editor. I’m really particular about the words I use. So if mine cause confusion, I edit for clarity.

That’s the sole reason I still posted about the butter knives. The entire fracas was due to the obviously confusing words I used. It now seems that there aren’t any better, more exact terms I could’ve used.

Board etiquette (elsewhere) also requires a reply to a friendly post, even if it goes off on a tangent. So it isn’t totally up to me to let a thread die.

And please, please, let’s not start any fights about this.
They are a total waste of time.

 

I also try to be, and I tend to understand things literally. It is the way my brain works, but apparently it can lead to friction. Which is never my intention.
In this case my remark in post#10 was just a matter of logic, I wasn't irritated and certainly not looking for a conflict.

Which you did, and it was clear.
To me there was never a problem, others regarded it as one. I only noticed that when I came back.
As I said before, a non-issue.

The only thing I’m blaming you for is the “curved blade” English butter knife I just bought, because I saw it when researching. (Just kidding… just in case…

I haven’t bought anything from UK since Brexit rules came in force, and the import charges added a whopping 35% to the sales price! The total with shipping was more than double the sale price. This wasn’t an expensive item to start with, but gosh!

Ditto. I used to buy a lot from the UK, but not anymore.
