What is this?

Im hoping someone out there can give me some guidance with a tapestry Íve inherited. I have no idea if this is done by hand or is just a run of the mill carpet mat, or if it’s old. I hope there’s an expert somewhere to guide me. The signature looks like Wilson to me, Thank You

 

I think its a hobbyist piece.Nicely done. Id guess the 1960s-70s. Not sure if theres a market for them,but who knows these days ?

Just to clarify..this looks like a piece of carpet in Real life, not a traditional tapestry…would it be a hook loom? I’ve been googling, I don’t really know anything about these.

 

From the one photo provided, it looks like needlepoint, which is typically done on canvas. It also looks like it's in a frame?
I don't know where you're located but I've read that in the UK, needlepoint is often called tapestry. Strictly speaking, however, it's not. Needlepoint consists of lots of diagonal stitches done on a background (typically canvas). True tapestry is woven on a special type of loom, not stitched.
If you provide a close-up photo of the stitches, and a photo of the back, it would be helpful.

EDIT: If it's not actually needlepoint (a canvas covered in small diagonal stitches), other possibilities include tufting and latch hook. Either way, it appears homemade from a kit and would only have sentimental value.

 

Sorry I can’t get to back of it because it’s very well framed but here’s a close up image.

 

From the close up, it does not look like needlepoint. It looks more like a commercial machine woven door mat. (Although it would be odd to frame a door mat.) But without a detailed view of the back and/or an edge, it is difficult to determine how it was made.

Perhaps if you can give us some more information and photos. How big is it? Can you show us the entire piece, including the frame, and a view of the back? Sometimes the frame and backing can provide clues for a possible date. If your camera is capable of a more detailed closeup, that might be helpful, particularly the area of the "signature". Try to get as close as you can, still producing a clear, focused image. When posting your photos, please select the option for "Full Size" rather than thumbnail. It makes things easier for us to see.

Sometimes members here recognize things immediately, but other items may require some research. The more information you can give us, the better chance we can come up with an answer for you.

 

Ah yes, the close-up shows it's definitely not needlepoint. And I, too, now think it likely commercially made, rather than hobbyist.

Signature looks like Wuson..WIílson? Very hard to distinguish. You can see the wooden frame with gold gilt, looks like a 70s frame to me. The back of the frame is brown papered . My daughter has it I’m trying to get a photo of the back, It’s about 900mm wide and 500mm high. , yes the size of a good door mat. I’ve googled for days but haven’t found one similar yet.
