I let the seller know that it was a woman, not Voltaire. The listing was updated.:facepalm::facepalm:

Ah but no update to the price, I see. I hope the seller enjoys looking at it.

I tried to "help" a seller exactly once, when they listed a glass cameo, which I also owned a copy of, as hardstone for a few thousand. Sent them a photo of mine. They were incredibly rude and dismissive. Angry I had questioned their authority lolll. So my new rule is Self Love. :hilarious:

I used to try and help folks understand that what they have....is not what they think they have...

many , where thankful for my expertise...... many more where angry and thought I was trying to ruin their listing and sale potential ......... so I too , put a stop to my altruism ......

Here.... I can help , where I can....because folks are looking for help..... and it's made me a better person............ mostly..;):woot:

Cameo Love is most definitely Self Love! :D

Yeah I love to help others, teach new skills my whole working life, and (most importantly!) learn from others! I missed the community of Ye Old World Wide Web. Social media has lobotomized and isolated us in weird ways. I tried Reddit for a minute but the vibe over there is getting the best snarky slam dunk. Which is funny, but not conducive to a healthy community. More like constantly having your guard up against attacks while you swim with sharks lol. Too much to bother with. If I'm dreading people's responses then it's not a good use of my time.

I used to put my 2 cents in on cameo listings that needed correcting quite a lot, when I was learning rapidly myself. Think only one person told me to keep my 'opinions' to myself. Many thanked me in an appreciative way; many also just acknowledged with a flat 'Thank you.'

Eventually felt it was not a good use of my time or of my developing expertise. Did contact a seller recently though, to tell them their lava cameo was not signed, it was labeled 'Cerere', Italian for Ceres. That got a 'Thank you!'

At least you can point to your own website as a CV. :D I'm glad your experience has been (mostly) positive.

I tried before to upload some pics from a permanent cameo exhibit in Leiden, Netherlands. Decided to try again.

But now it miraculously does. The cameos were incredibly small and detailed, with most no larger than your pinkie fingernail. Each display case was equipped with a monocular so that you could see the details of each piece. I am glad I got to see them. The museum itself is really wonderful. I spent several hours there.

At the Met, on a mezzanine above the main exhibits of the Greek & Roman department, there is a huge display of those tiny ring stones & no kind of magnifying assistance for viewing them. If you want to know details for one, you have to make noted of the number, then consult a computer database for a closeup shot & any info. It could not possibly be any more cumbersome.

I have been remiss in showing a few of my recent cameo purchases. But since I am sick at home, now seems like an opportune moment. Here is the Levasseur cameo. It is incredibly detailed, down to the garland of flowers in her hair and her sausage curls. I believe this was carved by Jules Clement Levasseur (1831-1888). 20240116_125947.jpg 20240116_125613.jpg 20240116_125958.jpg 20240116_130133.jpg

I want this one. Europa? Or some kind of taurophilia?

The monoculars were incredibly helpful to appreciate the exhibit more fully. I don't know why other museums don't employ them.

Yes, Europa and her bull. There were so many I wanted to stuff in my purse.
