Hi, Not my usual thing but I was very taken with this small (2.75 x 3.25 inches) portrait. I don't know what I'm looking at - photo, hand colored photo, painting? I would have thought painting, but it is on a thick card stock that I would expect a photo to be on. Any thoughts, how can I tell? The surface is very smooth to the touch, except the fur collar and brooch which feel ever so slightly raised. Also, from the dress, what time period would you say.

    Thanks!

always a wonder when a painting serves better than a camera....:D

Figtree3 What would you do if you weren't afraid?

If it is very smooth to the touch, could it be a printed copy of a painting, on photo paper?

Figtree, you may be right, a print of a painting. The more I look at the less I think it is a photo. It is just the type of paper that made me think photo.

What a lovely lady! If I had to create an identity for her, I'd say she was Charles Dana Gibson's mother. :)

To me, she looks like the matriarch in one of those sob stories in 1920/'30s Women's Magazines.

Susan, isn't that the one wherein she blows that curl off her forehead?

And settles everyone's hash at the end?

It looks like it could be the original print that came in the frame - to sell the frame.

Yes! I didn't realize GC was the daughter in that movie. Gee, this pic does look more like GC herself when she played Bette Davis' mother in the Now, Voyager.

My, wasn't she in some great movies ranging from silent movies to such movies as The Song of Bernadette, Rebecca, The White Cliffs of Dover, My Fair Lady, ....... not to mention her vauderville theatre days and the many London/Gt. Britain theatre works.

It's beautifully done... I really like the portrait.

From what I'm seeing in the bottom section, it looks like a late 19th century or early 20th century chromolithograph. But without seeing it enlarged more, that's not definitive.
