Ditto-Fine detective work. It's your piece but might think twice about turning into a table, unless you could manage to do it w/o harming the structure.
I'd consider it a 'museum piece'.

Very true, but not many tables made of early modern bindings

That would be one very rare table . Allright-just hide the damn ashtrays & beer bottles !

This is a good visualization how the book was used:

Ex-You could build a table that was basically a shadow box on legs.Like one of those coffee tables w/ a glass-topped sliding drawer-people put shells & all types of decorative items in them.
It would be a hoot though if you could form a short term partnership w/ a antiquarian manuscript collector or museum who was in need of an elephant folio (or whatever it's called) binding to complete/create a volume.
PS-Time for me to 'butt out' & let you enjoy your artifact !

I agree, maybe making a coffee table out if it is maybe not the best idea. I really don’t know what to do with it in the future. There are not really museums or libraries in my neiborhood that would be interested in such a giant binding though. Maybe I will find a good use to it in the future…

Is a compete book rare? I just inherited a complete book with all pages and binding in tact (although admittedly not in the best condition and in need of cleaning and preservation). [IMG]

Your photos didn’t show unfortunately. If you need help with books (before 1800) you can pm me. It is probably worth a separate topic .

Do you mean you inherited a similar book with the vellum pages still intact? That could be a very valuable book!
