Wow!!! I just discovered that thread and heavily enjoyed reading all 7 pages :woot:
Because of Jivvy's comments about diving into bagpipes and figure4 endless images and sites... I decided to stay safe and not being caught!:p
Welcome among us, Jeannette, and thank you for submitting this fascinating painting:)

Thank you! How could anyone be anything but friendly with such a wonderful and informative response to my first post. I was pleasantly surprised with how friendly the members were to me, a newbie, lol. So right back at ya! :D

That area of the painting is some of the most in need of professional attention, so hard to know what was really intended there. However, I don't know how an historian of Flemish art would characterize this genre, but I would have no trouble calling it Flemish magical realism. Pointy ears cannot be ruled out.

Welcome to the forum Jeanette:) What an interesting thread this is! Looking at the photo Aquitaine posted, are those letters on the clothing just under the head and paws of the dog?

Maybe! Also - did anyone notice that the old man #2's face has an eerie resemblance to a cheese sandwich?

It makes me sad, but I see no evidence of pointy ears in the original.

    Or letters.

The dimensions of the Sauvage painting are 6 3/4 x 9 in. (17.1 x 22.9cm) & yours are 21 x 16 1/2 in. The proportions are very close. Can the overall size of yours be measured precisely in inches? In cm/mm? I don't think your painting was cut down, think shape was following a decorative fashion of its time.

These seem to me to be there definitely for meaning, maybe twofold: summertime, when roses are in full bloom; fallen, the bloom is off, innocence lost. Dipped a little into the history & meaning of Beltane, which Wiki informs me was more meaningful to herdsmen than to agrarian people, a tradition among Gaels, bonfires a major part of the observance. Not really a good fit. I still think Midsummer is possible.

I mostly thought you might have input on the style/possible origin of the painting (not the crazy seal and all the rabbit holes that leads to).

It's certainly a bit of a guessing game at this stage, so no one will be held to their answers. :joyful::kiss:
