Ask the seller to send a photo of the back of the painting.

(Chiedi al venditore di inviare una foto del retro del dipinto.) using google translate.

Not a lot to go on... He's an Anglican clergyman so he's wearing a type of uniform -- a black suit with stock at neck and cassock. Given the height of his collar, I'd think Regency but I could be wrong. Oh, wait. The volume to his left is entitled Porteus's Sermons which were published in the Georgian period (1784) so no earlier. But given his natural hair, I'd think the portrait dates to later, (roughly) 1800-1830.

The book says Porteus Sermons, which dates to the late 18th C (1783 for one online), but, apparently, remained influential for a long time after. He was a noted anti-slaver. Portraits of Beilby Porteus show him be-wigged, but I wonder of this might be a later portrait of him at a younger age and wig less, or a descendant. If not him, then a follower. This may date the portrait to the late 18th, or early 19th C. His influence (again apparently) waned in the 19th C.

Does not appear to be Bishop Beilby Porteus. This is his portrait by Gainsborough. Your sitter has a less aquiline nose and a squarer jaw.

He's the third great-great-grandfather of Queen Elizabeth. Who knew.

And his mother was George Washington's cousin. Too interesting.
