I guessed she was in her 90s when I knew her in the late 80s (I never asked). I helped her with groceries for Meals on Wheels.

Lois V. She lived on her own her whole life in San Francisco. I recall she volunteered at PBS, and had a big crush on Hugh Downs. :)

It wasn't easy shopping with her - if I put something in the cart for myself, she'd take something of hers out. Lol

    We talked about EVERYthing.

No, but that's been a well known "secret" ingredient in mystery recipes for as long as I can remember.

I have reservations about a cake recipe with only 1 tablespoon of butter! That seems scant, at best

    Thanks, @Jivvy
That milky white skin and that hair!

I have heard of the tomato soup cake......I've never tried making it though. I think it was a war time cake?

One can make up for lack of butter in the recipe by making a delish whipped butter frosting to lather the cake generously!

It's how I make mine........(when I bake, but not so much anymore)

Actually I eat very little cake.....it's the frosting I'm after...... YUM!

Love the photo. Thanks for sharing. Not a fan of tomato soup. Blech!
I told a story here about home ec class having a recipe for mac and cheese with a can o tomato soup. Ugh! Gross. No cake should meet up with tomato soup.

By the way, old recipes sell nicely for those of you who find them and want to sell them in lots.

    Lovely lovely photo!

I'm thinking I might have had the tomato soup cake....church supper as a child maybe. Personally I've always loved tomato soup with a hearty grilled cheese sandwich.

    Hi,
Years ago I met a woman in my church. We referred to her as Miss Violet. She was a Ziegfeld Follies girl. She had to be 95 when I met her. I remember once going to her apartment. It was so "colorful" and her bed had thousands of ribbons tied to it everywhere. When I asked about the ribbons she replied " Some men put notches on their guns, I tie ribbons on my bed".
She was such a hoot. When she passed her great nephew had her cremated
without a service and cleaned her apartment and tossed everything. He lived in Arizona and with in three days everything was finished. God bless you Miss Violet.

A pox on Miss Violet's great nephew!!!

As for the cake, I've made it. Or one essentially the same. It's like the mayonnaise cake -- one doesn't taste th 'mystery' ingredient.

    She was a sweetie :)

    Thanks, Ghopper!

    :hilarious:YUM!:hilarious:

Mom experimented with every flavor of Campbell's, but she was smart enough not to screw around with the holy grail of carbs, or "starch" as we called it then!

There's such a interesting play of motion and light around her... Love the sunlight coming though her tambourine :)

Most of us, I suspect, bakers!

    Thanks, fig :)

    Thanks, sis :)

Lois gave me two of these, so I took one to her funeral and gave it to her family over lunch.

I was sorry I did, as they didn't even try to hide their surprise she'd had any friends, at all! Like I was doing her a huge favor! That was weird :(

    Thanks, lucille :)

    See above, silverthwait! :)

Thanks for all your comments! I'm certain Lois never dreamed so many would have seen and admired her in her glory :)

I will eat tomato soup ONLY if it has some vegetables in it.. I used to eat Vegetarian Veg Soup with the letters in it. YUM. That was good with a tuna sandwich and chopped tomatoes on white bread or a roll. And plenty of mayo.

One of the best soups which I think was discontinued was Chicken and Dumplings. I used it with cut up already cooked chicken, soy sauce and other things which I forget at the moment and put it atop minute rice.

I can still remember the smell when I opened the can of that soup. My GF soup smells like dog food. Yes it does. And does not taste much better. Ugh
