Would this be considered Hudson River School? It kind of resembles what I think of when I think HRS. Not enough for me to feel super confident though. It’s a bit dark and dirty but nice for the peanuts I paid.

    Signature….Carlin? Cartier? Otherwise? 3174FA6C-0204-4653-9D2B-9B210B174303.jpeg FC0D48B7-D2D7-4C7C-BB0D-0627194549B2.jpeg CF6BEEBB-8729-4A12-8589-A63A28E1F691.jpeg C534395C-4375-4E80-B828-BDAC0B0AC898.jpeg C553F9A3-FD7B-468F-8609-48558864ACB5.jpeg

HRS is more sweeping in scale from what I have seen.

Not what I think of with HRS, but I haven't done a deep dive on them.

Aquitaine Is What It IS! But NEVER BORED!

3 images in one.....FIRST is original with noise that showed up on enlarging removed.....SECOND and THIRD are just contrasting from the original, but also hoped the contrasting would show the signature better.....also sharpened a bit. My only concern about "Carlson" is that if you look carefully at the 3rd letter in the last name....it looks like the middle part of a capital 'N' is missing a diagonal 'slash'! But I also can't figure what name it could be with an 'N' there!!!

A tip and some (a lot) of spit might brighten that up.

I can't help you, just wanted to say I really like that. I would hang that in my home, just do something with the frame.

Would not call this HRS either. Looks like a lot of Indiana impressionist works done at the turn of the century, on into the first 3rd of the 20th. Similar works were done elsewhere, including Europe. I see F. Carlson. I have not been able to match to any known artist.

@mirana Fmi, would this work be considered an example of Impressionism or Tonalism?

Thanks for all the replies guys. So not HRS, good to know. I’ll familiarize myself a tad with Indiana Impressionists work a bit Brad. Thanks for looking for a match for me. I didn’t see any when I tried variations on the name.

Aqua thanks for cleaning up the signature. That was helpful!

Oooh Tonalism. that's a interesting suggestion!

I'll be honest I'm not sure I would subscribe this piece to any major Art Movement? It's nagging at me that it's more mid-century in style. Your request for a look at the back would definitely be helpful...

Going to disagree on Mid-Century. That's 1920s-1930s. And it may well be a print with painted enhancements.

I don't see tonalism, which presents an overall softer focus (atmospheric) view. You might say that the background of this painting shows some tonalist qualities but the overall look does not read tonalist to me.

Nothing on the back. I’d have posted it if so but I should have known y’all would want to see it anyways. The cardboard looks newer than early 20th to me possibly but it could easily have been put there at any time after the painting was finished. I hadn’t thought about a painted print but something seemed slightly odd about this piece to me. That would be an interesting explanation. I still think it’s nice there is just a certain je ne sais quoi I couldn’t put my finger. 9D9090A9-EF61-4603-887E-BD19A5A751A1.jpeg

That would have made this quite the score I think. He appears to be a very highly regarded artist with works in the top museums. His signature is pretty distinct though and distinctly different than my guys. 7F1D215E-3615-4BAB-89CC-7454FFC3E91B.jpeg

That cardboard, if not the base the possible re-touched print is on, should definitely come out of there so it doesn't continue to acid burn things. I'm not just saying that so I can get another look at what's going on with the back of it...but that's a bonus. :p

Haha. You’re not wrong! I’m not usually an improver of things more than a dusting though. More of a mover on’er of things and let someone else deal with it type. I have been thinking of getting a little picture framers nail gun though so that I can investigate backs and quickly and easily reapply them. If I do I’ll make this one of my experiments.
