It's easy to see the appeal of this furniture in Europe, it's medieval, a longggggggggggg time ago, 12th-15th centuries. We have no concept of that period here in america because we were not here!
If you look at period furniture from that time, it is very cool stuff.

    Linenfold or Linen-Fold carving?
Another discussion on Gothic revival cabinets on another forum came up & i was searching on here for previous pics, reread this thread and HERE I AM! :cigar:
In any event, linenfold carving was on posters cab and here is what Wiki says ( i know, unreliable but, even a blind squirrel finds an acorn every now & then)
"Linenfold (or linen fold) is a simple style of relief carving used to decorate wood panelling with a design "imitating window tracery",[1] "imitating folded linen"[2] or "stiffly imitating folded material".[3] Originally from Flanders, the style became widespread across Northern Europe in the 14th to 16th centuries. The name was applied to the decorative style by antiquarian connoisseurs in the early 19th century; the contemporary name was apparently lignum undulatum (Latin: "wavy wood"), Nathaniel Lloyd pointed out.[4]"
I would add that Flanders is the Dutch speaking part of Belgium.
I would also note that linenfold carving is found on american & english chests as late as the 17th century, just sayin....

Yeah, is. Not sure this is what AJ was referring to but if you look at first pic on this thread by OP, you see that linenfold carving on the side of his cabinet. Most revival Gothic furniture manages to jam it in there somewhere as it dates from that period.

Yeah, i hear you, period medieval furniture is very cool, particularly if it includes gothic carvings. Wood being perishable there isn't much of it around though so when a piece comes to market, competition is fierce.

lol, Yep, not a word you hear everyday, that's for sure. Mostly people that make furniture by hand & build with green wood, usually oak.
