Featured Crazy hinged band on ring

I have another beauty that I have been holding onto for researching. The ring is white gold and test higher than 14k but not quite 18K. I don't have platinum acid at the moment and will test again when I get it. I tested the stones and the center comes back as a diamond and I get moissanite readings from the surrounding stones (I need to clean and test again).
What has me puzzled the most is this unusual hinged band that opens up. I have never seen this on a ring before and can only think that it was meant for a lady who had large knuckles and couldn't get the ring on any other way lol
Have you ever seen this before?
Would you agree that this is Art Deco?

Yep! My mother just had our jeweler do this to her wedding ring as her arthritis has cause tremendous swelling in her knuckle.

I saw one like that years ago and was befuddled then.How cool to see another,and find out what it was for .

 

Dad had to saw Mom's wedding ring off at least once due to swelling and arthritis.

Yup. My mom's wedding ring spins on her hand now, but she can't take it off because her knuckles have swollen. They don't hurt, but it's an old age thing. Making a hinged shank makes total sense. It might be an entirely custom piece. Stones set like that were usually in white gold or platinum in the 30s. THis looks like yellow gold, so it might be a copy of an older piece, made so granny could take it off.

 

My wedding band fits around my finger but not over my knuckle. I am not going to get it resized because my daughter and granddaughters have tiny fingers like mine. I would like for them to have it even before i die. I can see that hinge would be a great for many old ladies!

My mother has tiny fingers,and none of my nieces can wear her rings.But my grandmother had even tinier fingers,even my mom cant wear her rings !

 

It is actually a huge issue. I have narrow fingers & I just had my wedding band resized to 3.5. I love this though. I agree with passing on jewelry my DIL’s has large fingers she is a size 10. My granddaughter hopefully won’t.

 

In hand, it is more white than yellow. I am going to take it to my gold buyer and have him test it with his electronic tester. I did a scratch test and 14k acid did nothing to the scratch. When I put 18k acid on the scratch, the gold floated but did not dissolve or change color. Also, the stones were giving me odd readings with my diamond pen (but it's a cheaper one - Presidium).

 

I'd be shocked if your gold buyer didn't make u an offer !
