Isn't he cute?? He's giving a mid century vibe, maybe scandi? I can't find another like him, and the signature doesn't turn up anything either. Is this a hobbyist piece, with the sig being wood burned like that?

So do I! I'm not sure where I envision him living, but he's living with me that's for sure. For 3 euros I couldn't pass him up. Is he of the period or in the style of do you think?

I think he is of the period. Maybe you can find out who FBS is, then you'll know for sure.

Nothing obvious comes up when searching FBS...I'll keep trying different things.

What wood is this? That will help.

The Middleton carvings are small and made in walnut. I've had three:

When I got them, I didn't know anything about them and listed them on eBay where they sold cheap. But from one of the listings, I got a response from his daughter-in-law:

The maker of these sculptures is Allan Middleton. He is my father-in-law. I am slowly collecting them for my husband because he had no sculptures made by his Dad. Allan Middleton made walnut or soapstone sculptures between 1965 and 1974 in Brantford, Ontario. He made 75 different sculptures, all Canadian animals, and sold them throughout North America and into the U.K. Some are quite large and beautiful.

I did notice some areas where it looked like the wings had been joined to the body, so I'm sure you're right. :D

That owl is gorgeous. I loved what was listed as a raccoon but I thought it looked much more like a weasel.

I vote hobbyist piece. Don't know what kind of glue was used but doesn't seem industrial as chipping can be seen on the outer edges of some of the laminated wood pieces.
But definitely one cool bird (goose?)!

I'd guess goose! Yep there are a couple of chips on the tail end, although I think one just looks like one and one actually is.

Oops, I think you're right, ABS.
Another oops.;) I see it now. I agree, that does make it later than mid-century.
