Hahah I can imagine the debates on the cooking methods, and each ones secret hacks - which may impinge on non traditional (or original) methods of cooking that dish.
You know now in India, we have also moved away from traditional cooking and its gets more and more difficult to cook some of the dishes the traditional way. I guess its the times to come.

 

I think diasporas tend to maintain tradition more, sometimes. A link with the old country. Although there’s some terrific modern Indian and other sub continent restaurants here, too.

The fiercest arguments I’ve heard are between west Africans on how to prepare jollof rice. You should hear what Nigerians say about the Ghanaian habit of adding carrot. And Jamaican views on what some have done to jerk, or rice and peas involve much swearing and shouting.

I get called auntie rather a lot by younger people, especially lads, whose origins and heritage are Indian. It’s lovely. And last weekend, an African stall holder addressed me, very respectfully, as mama. Which, thinking about it, might have been Mma.

 

Mma is familiar to me from Alexander McCall Smith's No. 1 Ladies' Detective series.

 

It happens with language too; accents and traditions and vocabulary hang on longer away from the mother country.

 

I’m a massive Precious Ramotswe fan.

There’s a whole book to be written about how language evolves, and many have been. Londonenglish is the most glorious muddle.

 

Blend-ins, imports, double-duties and draftees! American English is just as bad.

 

I kinda can't believe that the shop knew what this is and still priced it so cheap. Well, ok!

As for the Makah market basket ...or purse.... there's still some color on the dyed grass weave & only mimimal damage to the fine red cedar strips.

Right? That's crazy. I had a conversation with the employee, who complimented me on my purchase saying never in a million years could he ever make something like that.

Just posted this on the Tools forum with some questions. Jumble sale find.

 

Finds were kind of meager this past week.

Large Fiestaware platter (14"). Only $4.00.


This sterling base sauce bowl was $3.00.


Mack truck bulldog mascot was $2.00. Hard to photograph since he won't stand on his own. Bad dog!!!


Fenton thumbprint compote in colonial pink was $2.00.

 

My decent find was a copy of Godden’s European Porcelain for one whole pound.

That, the Neiger Beads and the big Whitefriars lump.

 

You all know I love finding jewelry and I am a disaster when it comes to glassware. I have been admiring a clear glass decanter similar to this in an antique mall, and I found this in a smoky gray glass today in a more expensive thrift shop for $7. I am sure it's not worth what the blue is, but I love it.

 

No idea, but for $7 you couldn't miss.

 

That’s a very nice kluk kluk. Yours has the blue grey tinge that might well mean Holmegaard. But I need to see the base.

 

Went to buy a Lalique vase this past weekend and ended up with a small collection of Daum figurines. I have no self control.

 

And some little perfume bottles for $5 each.
